ARACENA
(Huelva)

ARACENA
Aracena is a beautiful town in the north of the province of Huelva, nestled in the
Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche
Natural Park. It is an important tourist
place due to its historical heritage,
its nature and the well-known Jabugo ham,
produced in the area.
Not everything is beach in the province of Huelva.
 The landscape changes
radically inside, on the border with Extremadura.
The blue of the Atlantic
becomes the green of the Sierra Morena,
tinted by the white of the towns. One
of them is Aracena, the town whose narrow streets
overlook its castle of Muslim
origin that dominates the entire region.

La Gruta de las Maravillas
The Grotto of Wonders
At the base of the castle hill, in the heart of the town,
is one of the surprises that
Aracena hides: the Gruta de las Maravillas.
It is a natural cavity resulting from
the erosion of the waters on the limestone
of the hill itself and is considered the
first cave in Spain to be
opened to the public (1914).

Inside the Gruta de las Maravillas you will discover
a world of rocks and water,
where stalactites, stalagmites, lava flows
and other formations have made their
way showing that nature is very much alive.
The cave was discovered in the
search for silver and is more than two kilometers long,
 of which 1,200 meters
can be visited.

As in any other underground cavity,
the temperature is constant and moderate
(16-19 degrees) and the humidity
is very high (98%-100%), so it is
recommended to bring some kind of coat.
Castillo
Aracena Castle
The Castle of Aracena is what most attracts
 attention when arriving in Aracena,
as it is located in the highest part of the city.
It has Muslim origins (13th century)
and is partially preserved. Inside,
you can discover the beautiful church of
Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor,
 in the Mudejar style.

Museo del jamón

Ham Museum
The other great heritage of Aracena
 is Jabugo ham,
an authentic gastronomic
marvel of the Sierra de Huelva.
The Aracena Ham Museum, Interpretation
Center for the Iberian Pig, serves as a tribute to
this animal and the precious
product. Through panels and projections,
in the museum you will be able to
learn about the raising of the pig,
the importance of the acorn, life in the
pastures, the slaughter, as well as
the curing and maturing processes of the
ham.
The best Iberian hams in the world
 are raised in this area.

In addition, the museum has a shop where
it is possible to buy all kinds of top-
quality Iberian products. And it is that,
after this visit, it is difficult to resist the
temptation of not tasting any of them.
